Rivermere Care Home was taken over by Avery Healthcare at the start of 2017 and we have quickly set about transforming the fortunes of this splendid residential care home, bringing Rivermere into line with our exemplary standards and overarching care philosophy. It is this approach that has won us four national care awards in 2018 and the respect of many within the care sector.
Rivermere enjoys a pleasant situation close to the town of Sevenoaks, right next to Chipstead Lakes, on the edge of the Kent Weald, and easily accessible from both the M25 and M26. The home itself, surrounded by mature trees and garden offers an opulent feel and a care environment where staff are dedicated to the holistic well-being of the residents.
We realise that moving in to a new home is a big step and at Rivermere we treat all our residents with the dignity and respect they deserve and give them every opportunity to keep up with their interests, their connections with the local Sevenoaks community as well as their passions in life.
All bedrooms are light and roomy and have an en-suite wet room; residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms as they please. For the independently minded there are some apartments too with kitchenettes, and a living room, that are ideal for couples. A spacious atrium with feature chandelier and sweeping staircase leads on to an open-plan area which includes a bistro cum cafe, bar, and activity lounge. Here is where most of our residents like to congregate.
The second floor is dedicated to dementia care with its own dining room, lounges and activity area leading onto a spacious and safe patio area. On the ground floor there is a dining room, and hair and beauty salon, and on the first floor a lounge, where small groups or clubs can meet, as well as a cinema room.
To see what we get up to on a day to day basis visit our dedicated Facebook page or contact our friendly manager Sue Simmonds on 01732 748400 who will happily answer any questions you may have or contact our front of house team to arrange a show around our lovely Sevenoaks care home.
Life at Rivermere Care Home is guided by our residents who relish all the activities and events we put on for them as well as pursuing their own interests. This could be:
Growing pumpkins
Playing giant Scrabble
Walking for charities
Patting a Shetland pony or a snake
Practising Pilates
Painting
Yoga and meditation
Minds and bodies are kept active with daily quizzes and crosswords, listening to speakers on the history of teapots, conservation or the local history of Sevenoaks, with musical exercise, a game of croquet, or gardening. The words that find their way on to the giant Scrabble board are often a talking point and the keen Scrabble teams like pitting their wits in tournaments against other neighbouring homes. An active gardening club enjoys growing flowers and vegetables in the raised beds.
Everyone pulls together to make our open days and fetes great successes. Residents are happy to contribute to the wider community by raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society and local charities. They also appreciate a wide variety of musical entertainment from harp music, to jazz and Elvis Presley and like to participate in the special themed events we put on. Tea at the Ritz is the next one, I think. Very best dresses and suits for that one, then!
As we have our own minibus, we often get out and about. You will often see us enjoying the sites of nearby Sevenoaks or further afield around Kent. We are spoilt for choice in the abundance of nearby castles and gardens, but the seaside, garden centres and the theatre also prove popular places to visit.
We encourage friends and families to be as connected as they would like to be, and we invite them to our regular councils. The more the communication, the better the care and attention. Our families play an active part in home life, its a real feature of our Sevenoaks nursing home.
You are what you eat and at Rivermere we take food seriously, while making meal times fun and enjoyable occasions for our diners. There is always a wide variety of nutritional choices at all three meals of the day, which are cooked on the premises, from fresh and seasonal ingredients whenever possible. We like to source our food from local sevenoaks suppliers and producers, that way its freshness is guaranteed.
We like to mark special days – haggis on Burns Night, lots of green food for St Patrick’s Day, home-grown pumpkin pie at Hallowe’en, for instance. Once a month residents organise takeaways which they enjoy on their laps with a good film on the screen.
Throughout the day a range of freshly baked cakes and pastries, savoury snacks, fruit and drinks are available. Birthdays and anniversaries deserve special attention and our team enjoys making cakes and treats for those days, when relatives are more than welcome. There is a private dining room as well, if you want to have friends and family to yourself.
Rivermere Care Home in Sevenoaks recently received a positive Care Quality Commission (CQC) report. Though marked ‘inspected but not rated’ due to current national lockdown restrictions, the home received wonderful feedback on both staff and residents’ well-being as well as overall home care and maintenance during the Covid-19 pandemic. Towards the end of January, Rivermere Care Home’s Home Administrator, Vicky Hartnett, received a beautifully-written letter from a smart young lady called Holly, who is a student at Dunton Green Primary School. Holly mentioned in her letter that the school didn’t have suitable resources available for all students, with laptops that randomly switch off, and…
“There is not one of the staff that is not kind. There’s no fault in this place at all. It’s a beautiful place.” This is just one glowing comment of many in our most recent Care Quality Commission report for Rivermere Care Home, where we have been rated as Good following an unannounced inspection.
