Introduction To Avery Healthcare
Meet Our Founders And CEO
Founded in 2005 by John Strowbridge and Ian Matthews, who collectively bring over 50 years of experience, Avery Healthcare is led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jeremy Richardson. Jeremy remarks, “I am delighted to be joining Avery Healthcare as their new CEO. Avery Healthcare is already acknowledged as one of the UK’s leaders in residential social care, and I look forward to working with the team and the Board to build on the strong foundations that have already been established.”
Leading The Way In Senior Living
At Avery Healthcare, one of the leading care providers in the UK’s senior living sector, we take pride in managing over 100 care homes and four independent living retirement villages under the Hawthorns brand. With nearly 7,000 residents and over 10,000 dedicated and knowledgeable staff, we consistently set the standard for quality and innovation in the industry. Our care homes stand out with unique features that reassure prospective residents, current residents, their loved ones, and our stakeholders, affirming our unwavering commitment to exceptional care and resident well-being.
Exciting Partnerships For A Bright Future
In 2022, we announced a strategic partnership with Reuben Brothers while continuing our ongoing relationship with Welltower. Our journey with Welltower began in 2013 with a handful of properties. Now, with the addition of the Reuben Brothers joining us, we are excited about the future and the excellent growth prospects that lie ahead, enhancing the experiences of both residents and employees.
David Jr. Reuben highlighted this milestone: “This transaction further cements our long-term commitment in the senior living care and lifestyle sector – with a clear focus on providing exceptional levels of care and customer service.” Despite recent challenges in the sector, we remain committed to operating with the same teams, board of directors, and values, ensuring business as usual and a bright future ahead.
Avery Collection: Growing Our Family
In a significant move that underscores our growth and future prospects, we launched Avery Collection on 1st June 2023. This expansion added 29 top-tier care homes in the UK to our portfolio, bringing the total at the time to 99 homes and positioning us as the 5th largest care provider in the UK. The new homes, strategically located in critical areas such as London, the home counties, and the South-East of England, share our unwavering commitment to exceptional care and resident well-being.

Resident Well-Being
Well-being stems from living a fulfilling and meaningful life. What that means in practice is unique to each individual. It’s why at Avery, we take the time to engage in Life Story work with each resident, learning about their interests and routines to create opportunities for positive engagement every single day.
With a wealth of activities that support the physical, social and psychological well-being of our residents, there really is something for everyone irrespective of their age, health or background. It’s something we pay close attention to by regularly talking to our residents about what they’re passionate about, what they’d enjoy doing more of and how we can help them achieve their goals.
Activities aren’t limited to scheduled events. We understand that a true sense of purpose comes from daily living, be it through spontaneous activities, our ‘Avery in Bloom‘ competition or getting involved in daily tasks around the care home — we’ve even had residents who enjoy assisting at reception.

Serving our residents with delicious food is about so much more than nutrition at Avery. Our award-winning chefs work with an expert dietician, Helen Simpson to create seasonal meals that please the eye as well as the taste buds, in addition to catering to the varied dietary, nutritional and cultural needs of our residents. Every ingredient is carefully sourced and wherever possible, we use local suppliers to ensure the freshest produce goes into our meals.
Food forms such a strong link to our identities and heritage and we believe this should not be lost just because an individual moves into a care home. It’s why our chefs take the time to listen to the likes and preferences of our residents by developing meals that they can enjoy every day.
All of our menus are adapted to meet local tastes. At Birchwood Grange in Harrow, we have a dedicated vegetarian-only kitchen with a diverse range of authentic Asian meal options to cater to both our Asian residents and all of our other residents who’d like to try something different. Meanwhile at Albion House in Birmingham, we routinely provide a range of Caribbean dishes that have proved to be very popular to all.
