Helen Braves the Shave at Lavender Lodge!

Deputy Manager of Lavender Lodge Care Home, in Farnborough, Helen Rooke, decided that she wanted to Brave the Shave as part of a charity fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support, in memory of a family friend who sadly passed away from breast cancer last year. With support from the whole home, who also wanted to support this very worthy charity, we put on a spectacular event to raise as much as we could!

The event took place on Saturday 6th July and we also invited Avery Ambassador, Stage and TV actress Sherrie Hewson to join us! Helen asked Sherrie if she would help to shave Helen’s head. Sherrie confided to Helen that she had never shaved someone’s head before but promised not to ‘scalp’ her!

We decorated our home in Macmillan colours with purple and green balloons and bunting. One in two people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime, and Macmillan assists that person through the whole journey, providing financial, emotional and physical support.

The event started with Home Manager Jillian Whiting welcoming Sherrie to the home and giving her a tour before the main event. Sherrie started Helen’s head shave, but quickly a variety of other people also joined in before a hairdresser completed the head shave. In the weeks leading up to the event, Helen had been dying her hair fun colours and she wanted to continue this after the head shave… so Sherrie dyed Helen’s head purple!

Our entertainer for the day was Jane Beaumont. Jane is a regular visitor to Lavender Lodge and she entertained residents with their favourite songs. Sherrie sat with residents and sang along to Jane whilst talking to residents and families about their experiences at Lavender Lodge.

A raffle was held to raise extra money for Macmillan. Prizes included a 4.5kg bar of Toblerone, won by resident Eileen, a bottle of wine, won by resident Barbara and a Tigger cuddly toy, won by resident Jean!

Staff, residents and relatives had a wonderful afternoon and the laughter could be heard throughout the home. Great memories were made for a great charity. We are very proud to have raised £942.80 so far for Macmillan Cancer Support.
