Avery Joins Care Workers Charity Three Peaks Challenge

Friday 13th – unlucky for some? Not for the Avery teams that took part in the Care Workers Charity Three Peaks Challenge! Three staff from Amarna House Care Home in York joined five staff from Avery Group Support Centre for the challenge on 13th July, and soon discovered that the trek was much more demanding than they originally thought! However, the teams powered through and were delighted have raised over £2,500 between them!

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is a shorter version of the more famous Three Peaks of Ben Nevis, Scaffell Pike and Snowdon. It is run over the three highest peaks in Yorkshire, all forming part of the Pennine range in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in South Yorkshire.

There was some healthy competition between the two teams, with Amarna House’s staff leading the way until Tim Moore and Megan Marlow overtook them on the downhill slope of the last peak. In total the trek is over 5,200 feet in altitude and 24 miles in distance.

Tim Moore was the first of the Avery staff to finish, in just 10 hours and 30 minutes. Tim is a very active person, walking to and from work, but he still found this a challenge; Northamptonshire lacks mountains and large hills whereas Yorkshire has them in abundance. Tim’s favourite part of the challenge was the Ribblehead Viaduct, so much so that he would like to return to walk the area again. His motivation for supporting and taking part in this walk came from a close friend, who put his career on hold in his early 20’s to become his Father’s carer for the next 10 years. Tim’s friend was lucky enough to have a fantastic network of friends and family to support him when his father sadly passed away earlier this year, but many carers aren’t as fortunate.

The CWC organised the fundraising challenge as part of their lead up to the Care Worker’s Charity Day on Monday 30th July. Many of Avery’s care homes are holding Summer Cocktail Parties on this day to support the charity and care workers who go the extra mile. Avery Healthcare is delighted to be a founder member of the Care Workers Charity (CWC) and a Gold Sponsor.
