Rowan Court Care Home, just off the main Silverdale Road in Newcastle-under-Lyme, is only a mile from the town centre, yet backs onto fields and overlooks Lyme Brook. The home has good transport links with a regular local bus route connecting the bus station. It has an excellent local reputation, and enjoys close links with the next-door Queen Elizabeth Bowls Club.
Rowan Court is founded on our principles of compassion and high quality, and our team of dedicated staff provide excellent, personalised care, whether it’s residential, dementia or nursing. We understand the value of keeping residents physically and emotionally engaged, and in this we are supported by a wide community of local groups, who are fully involved in a varied programme of activities.
We have lots of ‘old ducks’ who live here, but we also have real ducks who live in our garden. Jack and Vera roam freely in the gardens before being safely overnighted in their bespoke duck house. (Hope it didn’t cost too much!) The extensive gardens are in the process of being remodelled to provide raised beds, a potting shed and patio areas, adding to the existing lawns and mature trees. Several of the rooms on the ground floor and some of the communal areas have open access into the gardens.
We put particular focus on dementia care, and the aviary in our Memory Care Suite is a popular talking point. Learning residents’ life stories, introducing reminiscence sessions and using the internet as a resource for evoking memories and past customs are all excellent launching pads to fully rounded care and sense of well-being.
All our bedrooms are ample in size and flat screen TVs. Residents like to put their own stamp on their rooms and take pride in their photos and keepsakes that they have on display. Our bright lounges, full of chatter, rather than televisions, are companionable, social spaces, with quiet spots too for reading or doing a jigsaw.
Please call Jacinta Greatrex on 01782 622144 if you have any further questions or take a look at our Facebook which is updated regulalrly with goings on in the home. Better still, come and visit and our front of house team would be glad to show you around the home.
Jack and Vera, the ducks
Our Staffordshire care home has established strong ties with local schools and associations, who play a valuable role in ensuring residents remain part of the wider community. Students from Newcastle-under-Lyme’s college are regular visitors and spend many days making friends with residents and joining in with activities, which may be:
- Choir sessions with children
- Crafting and clay modelling
- Wine and cheese tasting
- Dressing up
- Sitting in the garden in big hats
Rowan Court has its own minibus which regularly takes residents on trips to places of interest all year round. Our full-time Activity Coordinator is always surprising us with new and stimulating places to visit. There’s nothing like a change of scene to raise the spirits. And sometimes we just like to watch our ducks!
Eating is the Best Policy!
Well, of course it is. After all we are what we eat! Our resident chef and assistants make sure that all residents receive the very best of healthy and balanced meals, and to that end they cook everything from fresh, sourcing it locally whenever possible. Residents are consulted in the menu planning stages and are always given a choice at every meal. Breakfast in bed, should you want it, as well! And if you fancy something that isn’t on the menu that day, just have a quiet word and you’ll find us quite obliging.
As well as keeping the body going, mealtimes are about coming together and being sociable. Often these times are the highlight of the day; an aperitif and a glass of wine adds to the occasion. The freshly baked cakes and pastries that appear in the morning and afternoon are popular too. On nice days you can have them in the garden with the ducks.
