Residential homes are not normally associated with penthouse suites, but Darwin is no ordinary care home. The top floor (Spires Suite) of Darwin Court Care Home is devoted to exclusive retirement living – beautifully furnished suites with a huge rooftop garden and views out across Lichfield city to the cathedral and the hills beyond. Something of a unique proposition.
The home is situated in a quiet residential area of Lichfield, close to Stowe Pool, which is a site of special scientific interest (SSI). Nursing and dementia care is also offered on the first, second and third floors, so we cater across the board. But whatever your needs, our dedicated Activity Coordinators ensure that there is always something to stimulate you and keep you on your toes. From the top floor to the bottom, life at Darwin is supportive and above all fun.
Bedrooms are spacious and come with walk-in showers and flat screen TVs, and are furnished to a high standard. We like our residents to bring in their own things with them to add a personal touch to their rooms and make them feel more at home. Communal spaces are vibrant, light and airy, and there’s always a quiet spot to be found, if you don’t want to engage in social activities.
There are regular visits from local community groups, both young and old, faith or interest based, as Darwin Court is now firmly embedded in the local Lichfield community.
To see what we get up to you might want to view our dedicated Facebook that is kept up to date with all the activities and goings on in the home, or call our friendly manager Steven King on 01543 250824 or drop by and have a tour of our lovely care home.
Life cannot always be a bed of roses, whether you are living in your own home or you are in a home. But life at Darwin is yours to live, and yes, we do have some beds of roses! You can be involved as much or as little as you want. However, it is our philosophy that being active mentally and physically is good for the well-being. Walk into the lounges and you will be struck by the absence of TVs, and notice the chatter and activity that fills the room. No slumping here, then! How you choose to spend your time is, of course entirely up to each person and many residents prefer to relax with a book or catch up with the papers in one of our quiet lounges.
Gardening plays quite a large part in the life of the home. Here are some of the benefits:
Fresh air and exercise are good for you.
You can work from a wheelchair.
You can eat the fruits of your labours.
Flowers brighten everything up.
You can have trips out to garden centres.
You can feel the soil in your hands and be connected to the earth.
We have mini-greenhouses on each floor as well as extensive outdoor gardens. There are many indoor activities too. We place an emphasis on reminiscing, learning life stories and providing stimulation, whether through the wonders of the internet, i-pads and Skyping, or by having a good one-to-one chat. Check out our Facebook pages to see what goes on and be kept informed.
We often get out of the home too and visit sites of local interest, whether it’s a trip to the theatre, a Sunday pub lunch, a group stroll or bird spotting around Stowe Pool.
Mealtimes are often the highlight of the day and there is always a choice of freshly prepared, well thought-out food that is full of goodness. We believe in supporting the local economy and use Lichfield based butchers, grocers and greengrocers for most of our produce. We also like to grow as many of our own herbs as we can, as it involves the residents and adds extra freshness and taste.
Meals are sociable occasions and can be enjoyed with a glass of wine, but if you want to take your meal in the privacy of your own room, then that’s fine too. Guests are always welcome to join us for lunch or dinner — and a glass of wine, of course.
Between meal times there are freshly baked cakes and biscuits to enjoy with a nice cup of tea. If the weather is fine, our roof garden with its big sky and uninterrupted views, is the perfect spot to enjoy elevenses. Come and join us!
