Situated in Witherwack, a quiet residential area, north of Sunderland city centre, Highcliffe Care Home has gained a reputation across Tyne and Wear for the excellence of its care and strong sense of community. Adam Kane, a long serving member of the Highcliffe team was recently promoted to Manager. Our Sunderland residential care home is rated by Sunderland City Council as Gold standard, a fact we are all very proud of and also offers excellent dementia care and support.
The situation on Whitchurch Road is close to the Fulwell Quarry Nature Reserve and not that far from the sea. The home is light and airy throughout and the good-size bedrooms come with en-suite washrooms. Adam likes to think of it as the residents’ home and encourages them to bring as many as personal touches to their rooms as they can fit in.
The lounges are inviting spaces for social activity or just for sitting quietly, and the garden can be a spot for action or a quiet space as well. There are plenty of seats, a gazebo and raised beds full of plants for our green fingered residents.
While it is nice to be acknowledged for excellence, we prefer to be judged on the well-being of our residents, so please make your own judgements from the information below and the posts from our Facebook which catalogue the day to day activities in our Sunderland care home.
Contact Adam Kane on 0191 516 0606 if you have any further questions or would like to visit our care home in Sunderland and have a tour.
Well, it can be on a nice sunny day and an ice cream in your hand. Highcliffe is only a short drive to the beach, so you’ll often find our minibus heading that way, and its occupants enjoying a bracing stroll. Life within our care home is always stimulating and varied as we recruit energetic Activity Coordinators whose job it is to provide something that everyone can get involved in, whatever their interests, every day of the week. Besides being on the beach, you might find us:
• Making collages
• Planting petunias
• Fashioning jewellery
• Enjoying a Sit and Be Fit session
• On a trip to the Washington Wetlands Trust
We like our forays away from our home and visit all manner of local Sunderland attractions, whether it’s trips to the theatre, bird watching in the countryside or just a Sunday lunch down at the local pub. Our family and residents’ committee plays an important role in choosing activities and steering home life in general.
Fish and chips are a good old favourite, especially if you’re at the seaside, and they might turn up on the menu on a Friday. (There are some things that never change!) If they do, our chef and his team make sure that the fish is as fresh as it can be and that the batter is home made. And that is true of all our food – it’s fresh, cooked on the premises, locally sourced when possible, and healthily balanced. There is a choice at each meal, we are good at catering for poor appetites and know how to make food look good.
Between meals we are spoiled by the home-baked cakes and pastries (fruit is always available too) and other tasty treats that are served up. Guests are welcome at any time to eat with us, as we like to make mealtimes as sociable occasions as we can. Come and join us and you’ll get a glass of wine too!
