Southbourne Beach Care Home has unveiled a stunning mermaid tail sculpture as part of The Tiny Tail Trail, an exciting community project raising vital funds for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice.

This special initiative supports the charity, which provides essential care for families of children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, offering a lifeline of emotional and practical support.

Southbourne Beach Care Home’s three-foot-tall mermaid tail sculpture was brought to life over several weeks by Southbourne Beach Care Home residents and staff, with Activities Assistant Kiera, Care Assistant Alex, and 79-year-old resident Penny Rees leading its concept, design, and painting.

Penny, an avid painted, shared, “It was wonderful to be part of this project. It reminded me of the fun times I had painting with my grandchildren, and I’m so proud that our work will help others.”

Southbourne Beach Care Home, part of Avery Healthcare, has been fundraising for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice since last summer, with a target of £750 to be raised by March 2025. All proceeds will go directly to the hospice to support its vital services.

The Home Manager, Morgyn Ross, commented, “We are delighted to be part of such a creative and meaningful project. Our residents and staff really embraced the opportunity, and we’re proud to be supporting Julia’s House Children’s Hospice in this unique way.”

The sculpture will be featured in The Great Tail Trail, which runs from 5th April 2025 until 1st June 2025, where over 100 mermaid tail sculptures will be displayed across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole, helping to raise awareness and funds for Julia’s House.

A representative from Julia’s House Children’s Hospice said, “With hospices facing significant funding challenges, events like The Great Tail Trail are vital in ensuring we can continue to provide life-saving services. Thank you to Southbourne Beach Care Home.”

After the trail ends, the sculpture will return to Southbourne Beach Care Home for residents, staff and loved ones to admire.
