Birchmere House Hosted a Private Concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

Company News

Birchmere House enjoyed an extraordinary morning when five exceptional musicians from the world‑renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) visited the home for a private performance.

What began as an ordinary Monday morning quickly became a truly unforgettable experience for residents, family members, team members and friends from the local community, all of whom filled the lounge to capacity.

The atmosphere was alive with anticipation as Jackie on Cello, Charlotte and Collette on Violin, Elsbeth on French Horn and Katherine on Harp took their places. These highly accomplished musicians, who usually perform at Birmingham’s grand Symphony Hall to audiences of thousands, chose instead to spend their morning at Birchmere House.

Their beautiful programme carried residents on a gentle classical journey, evoking memories, sparking conversations and creating moments of deep emotion. One resident, Geoff, expressed what many felt, commenting, “This has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me, something I will never forget. I can’t believe they are here in my home.”

This remarkable visit was made possible through the dedication of Senior Well‑being Co‑ordinator, Kerry Counihan, who contacted Jo Wright, Community Talent & Development Manager at the CBSO. After working around the orchestra’s demanding schedule, a date was secured, and even more impressively, the concert was offered completely free of charge.

The lead violinist shared a moment that delighted everyone, explaining that while the rest of the orchestra were on a six‑hour train journey to Europe, they had chosen to come to Birchmere House instead.

The morning was filled with gratitude and joy as residents tapped their feet, swayed gently to the music and reminisced about concerts they had attended in years gone by. The performance became far more than entertainment; it was a moment of connection, community and shared appreciation that will be remembered for a long time.

Birchmere House extends heartfelt thanks to Jo Wright and the talented CBSO musicians for gifting residents such a special experience, and to Kerry, whose creativity and commitment continue to bring extraordinary opportunities to life within the home.
