Situated in Kingswood on the outskirts of Bristol, Avon Valley opened in May of 2019. Just a two minute drive from the A4174 Bristol ring road and 20 minutes from the M4, our care home offers residential, dementia and respite care to residents drawn from across the South Gloucestershire, Somerset and Bristol areas. Our proximity to the South Gloucestershire and Cotswold countryside is a big asset and our communal balconies look out over the beautiful rolling hills beyond Bristol’s city limits.
Life at Avon Valley Care Home is active and engaging, we are a diverse bunch of people, and our activities and engagements reflect this. There really is something for everyone, whether it is trips out around Gloucestershire and Somerset or the local community groups who pass through our doors.
We never forget that this is your home, and we work hard from day one to settle everybody in. Your room is your own and you can furnish it in any way you wish. At Avon Valley Care Home, we acknowledge that life is for living, and so we encourage and support all our residents in continuing to pursue and share their retirement hobbies or interests with other like-minded residents.
Growing up all I wanted to do was join the Army, and my dream career came true at the age of 16yrs old. I joined the British Army and became a Combat Medical Technician. I completed 10 weeks of basic training in Lichfield, then phase 2 training in Aldershot finally being posted to Tidworth as a qualified Combat Medical Technician. I served 4 years all together, completing a 5week exercise in Cyprus and a 6 month tour of Bosnia, gaining a medal.
I left the army as I became a mum and my priorities had changed. I joined the care sector as I was a young mum and needed to support myself and my daughter and the shifts worked for me, however I did not realise at the time how much I would enjoy it. I worked for a care company in somerset for 16yrs as a carer and senior. I have now been in the care sector for over 20yrs and have worked my way up to Manager. I came to Avon Valley before it had even opened in April 2019 and helped the previous manager build a team and put into place good practices and routines, and develop staff into a team I am very proud of, delivering excellent care and services to our ladies and gents. I am so very proud of this home and will continue to my upmost best for those residing, working and visiting here.
Mealtimes can be the highlight of our day. We aim to make the experience as enjoyable and sociable for our residents as possible. Our excellent team of chefs are trained on delivering choice, quality, seasonality and nutrition in all our meals and we often enjoy themed culinary events too. Our kitchen staff love to keep our residents fed and happy, and if there is nothing on the menu that you fancy then the team will happily create something else. Our Chefs ‘follow the food’ and chat with residents about their likes and dislikes, ensuring their food is always well-received. Our gardening club provide the kitchen with many of the herbs needed for the delicious dishes made daily. Much of our food is locally sourced from Bristol and Gloucestershire suppliers or growers in our aim to shop locally and sustainably. We even have suppliers come and visit the home to present their produce so that residents can see the people behind their ingredients.
Snacks are the perfect accompaniment to the day. There are normally freshly baked cakes and biscuits available throughout the day, and our frequent guests are most appreciative when they visit loved ones in our cafe. Afternoon tea is something of a regular fixture at our retirement village in Bristol, again it is a time to gather and share in the days news or just make some new acquaintances.
