Residents at Butlers Mews Care Home Receive Surprise Visit from Woolly Pals

Company News, Butlers Mews

Butlers Mews Care Home was recently visited by The Alpaca Pals, bringing some furry fun to the residents.

The two alpacas, named Mickey and Julio, visited the care home in Rugby as part of a pet therapy programme.

A 2023 systematic review published in BMC Geriatrics found that interactions with animals in care homes can lead to reduced feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression among residents.*

The Alpaca Pals, a local company specialising in therapy alpacas, ensured the animals were calm and friendly, allowing residents to interact with them safely. Residents enjoyed feeding them carrots and stroking their soft fleece.

The gentle alpacas made their way through the Avery Healthcare-owned care home, taking the lift to visit residents on all floors to ensure no one missed out.

The visit was a hit with residents and their families. One family member commented, “We loved it, so did Dad. It’s wonderful to see people giving their time for things like this.”

Resident Francis Kickham, 85, said, “They were funny animals and their coats were so soft to touch!”

Another resident, 85-year-old Robert Hughes, said, “I enjoyed the visit and liked the alpacas a lot, plus they were well behaved!”

“Animal therapy is a great way to break the routine and bring some joy indoors. It was lovely to see everyone’s smiles,” said a staff member from Butlers Mews Care Home.

The Alpaca Pals team also shared interesting facts about alpacas and the differences between them and llamas, offering a fun and educational experience for all.

“It’s very special for us to be able to share these wonderful animals and bring smiles, laughter and happiness to people of all ages!” said a representative from The Alpaca Pals.

At Avery Healthcare, creating enriching and joyful experiences for residents is at the heart of everything they do, and this alpaca visit was a perfect example of their commitment to well-being.
