Mark was nominated as a surprise by his team for the award and outshone the competition. With over 1,400 homes in the London region, this was no small achievement! The judges were equally impressed, saying, “Mark was able to clearly demonstrate how his vision, passion and sheer determination has transformed the lives of his residents.” They continued, “The panel were so impressed by Mark’s achievements and by his endless drive and vision, especially meeting the diversity of his community. Well done Mark!”

Upon winning the award, Mark said, “I never expected to win! I’m just doing my job that I’ve done my whole life which is to care for people as best I can. Care is a very hard job, but it’s what I love to do, so it’s a great surprise to be recognised for it.”

Mark has been the Home Manager at Birchwood Grange Care Home for four years and his enthusiasm is infectious. His welcoming personality, humour and drive help make the home the fun, vibrant community for which it is now renowned. He has been elected to be the Chairperson at the Enhanced Care Steering Group, commissioned for NHS England, and also sits on the Brent Council board, representing the London-North West care homes.

Mark was congratulated by staff and residents after his success on the night and is now shortlisted for the National Finals for the Great British Care Awards 2019 in March.

Well done Mark – a very worthy winner! The very best of luck for the National Finals!
