How One Care Home is Brought to Life with Wool Thanks to Concierge Knitter

Company News, Virginia Water

For 79-year-old Noreen McCall, knitting isn’t just a hobby – it’s woven into the very fabric of her life.

A dedicated carer for over 52 years, Noreen has spent the last 16 years at Virginia Water Care Home, where she now works as a Concierge.

But beyond her official role, she brings an extra touch of warmth and creativity to the home, incorporating her lifelong passion for knitting into daily life.

“I remember making a pair of red and grey socks during a domestic science lesson at the age of nine,” Noreen recalls. “I was so proud of them, and that feeling has stayed with me ever since.”

Since then, knitting has been a constant in Noreen’s life. “Every stitch tells a story, “She says. “Whether it’s a blanket, a toy, or a festive decoration, I put my heart into every piece.”

At the Avery Healthcare-owned care home, Noreen’s intricate creations are much more than decorations – they create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for residents and staff alike.

“Whenever you see a beautifully knitted figure or decoration on display, you can be sure it’s Noreen’s handiwork,” says Home Manager Ewa Jaworska. “Her work brings so much joy to the residents and staff.”

Within the care home, Noreen has knitted chicks for Easter, Nativity displays, the Royal family, Care Bears, Romeo and Juliet, post-box toppers, and much more.

Noreen’s knitting has also become a social activity within the home, encouraging residents to gather, reminisce about their own crafting experiences, and even take up knitting themselves.

“Seeing Noreen’s work inspired me to pick up my needles again,” says resident Barbara. “It’s a wonderful way to relax and feel productive.”

Resident Phoebe said, “I thought the last display was marvellous. It was of Romeo and Juliet, which took pride of place on the grand piano in Virginia Water Care Home for all to see.”

“It is amazing what Noreen can do. I think she is just so clever. She makes displays for us here and they’re wonderful,” said resident Muriel.

For Noreen, knitting and caring for others have always gone hand in hand. Since beginning her career in the 1970s, she has worked in various nursing homes and assisted living facilities, always bringing joy through both her caring nature and her craft.

“I love seeing the residents enjoy something I’ve made,” she says. “It feels like a little piece of home.”

Home Manager’s Ewa Jaworska adds, “Noreen’s spirit extends beyond her knitting. She’s the heart of this home. Her care and creativity lift everyone’s spirits, and it shows in the way residents interact and the warmth of the atmosphere.”

Knitting has long been recognised for its mental health benefits, helping to reduce stress, improve focus, and encourage mindfulness.

For both Noreen and the residents, it’s a therapeutic activity that brings both joy and a sense of connection.
