From Teacher to Trailblazer: Jean Barstead Celebrates a Century of Life and Legacy on New Years Day

Company News

Jean Barstead, a resident at Derby Heights Care Home, marked her 100th birthday on New Year’s Day with a memorable celebration, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow residents.

When asked about the secret to her longevity, Jean shared with a smile, “It’s a nip of sherry and keeping your mind active.”

Jean is well known for her active lifestyle, particularly in the world of bridge. She founded the Garforth Bridge Club 50 years ago, which quickly became a staple in the local community.

Under her leadership, the club grew in popularity, providing a welcoming space for both seasoned players and beginners alike. Jean continued to play well into her 90s, always enjoying the strategic challenges and social aspects of the game.

The milestone birthday party featured a performance by singer Richard Comfort, who was joined by Jean’s granddaughter-in-law, Beth, for a special duet. Guests enjoyed a buffet, balloons, and a display of photos showcasing key moments from Jean’s extraordinary life.

Born in Morley, West Yorkshire, Jean had a distinguished career as head teacher at Oulton Infants School after training at Leeds Teacher Training College.

She married Ron Barstead in 1950, and the couple shared 37 years together before Ron’s passing in 1987. They had two daughters, Susan and Carolyn, and Jean is now a proud grandmother and great-grandmother.

Later in life, Jean developed a keen interest in photography, capturing many of her travels and family moments. Her adventures have taken her to iconic destinations such as India, China’s Forbidden City, and Lapland.

Since moving to Derby Heights in May 2022, Jean has become a cherished resident.

The care home is dedicated to delivering exceptional respite, residential, and dementia care, as well as creating a vibrant environment for its residents.
