Merlin Court Care Home recently welcomed Dinky Ponies, a team of mini-Shetland ponies providing therapeutic visits to care homes, hospitals, and schools.
The visit to the Avery Healthcare-owned care home in Marlborough was a success, with residents, staff, and visitors enjoying the calming presence of the ponies.
Residents had the opportunity pet their new hoofed friends, offering them a special form of emotional support.
Merlin Court Care Home is committed to offering enriching experiences for its residents, incorporating animal-assisted therapy as part of its approach to care.
Studies show such therapy can reduce loneliness, lower stress, and improve overall well-being for elderly individuals.
According to the University of Lincoln (2022), “Therapy animals offer companionship and emotional support, greatly improving the quality of life for elderly residents.”
Resident Christine Daniels, aged 85, said “The ponies brought a smile to my face. It was so nice to see them up close.”
Staff at Merlin Court were equally impressed by the positive impact.
“It’s amazing to see the residents light up when they see the ponies. It’s a great way to improve their mood and bring everyone together,” said Bethan Williams, Activities co-ordinator at Merlin Court Care Home.
Dinky Ponies was founded by Sarah Woodland in 2022. What began as a duo of ponies, Poppy and Tinks, has since expanded into a dedicated team.
Dinky Ponies visit locations across Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, and Gloucestershire.
“It’s lovely to see the joy the ponies bring to everyone, from residents to staff,” said Woodland. “Each visit is a chance to make a positive impact, and we’re grateful to be part of their lives.”
Merlin Court Care Home is proud to provide these meaningful experiences, ensuring its residents receive compassionate and joyful care.
