Last week, residents from Hempstalls Hall Care Home joined the celebrations for World Book Day at nearby Hempstalls Primary School.
The event brought together multiple generations to share their love of reading.
World Book Day, celebrated annually on the first Thursday in March, encourages children to discover the joy of reading and share their love for their favourite characters.
This year’s event at Hempstalls Primary School was filled with excitement, as students and staff dressed up as characters from beloved books.
Residents from the Avery Healthcare-owned Care Home had the special opportunity to read with the children.
The children also showcased their artistic talents, proudly displaying paper plates decorated to represent their favourite characters, including monsters Inc, Harry Potter, And ninja mutant turtles.
“The children were so confident, outgoing, and happy to share their artwork and stories,” said 84-year-old Ken Jones, a resident at Hempstalls Hall Care Home, “It was wonderful to see their personalities shine through their work.”
Jo Hosey, aged 75, another resident, was struck by the children’s politeness. She said, “They were so respectful and eager to chat. It was lovely to see them so engaged.”
Alan Grimwood, aged 96, a fellow resident, praised the school’s supportive environment, “Hempstalls Primary is an excellent example of good teaching, where children feel relaxed and encouraged to communicate confidently.”
“We’re delighted to see our residents participating in community events like this,” said Lisa Bailey, Home Manager at Hempstalls Hall Care Home, “It’s a wonderful example of how books and storytelling can bring generations together in such a meaningful way.”
“It was lovely to see the children showing there plates to the visitors and reading to them,” said a teacher from Hempstalls Primary School.
“We look forward to continuing to grow these connections and inspire a love of reading that spans across generations,” added Lisa Bailey.
The celebration of World Book Day at Hempstalls Primary School was a reminder of the power of books to bring people together, inspire creativity, and spark new conversations.
