Comfortable Living in Heckmondwike

Here at Avery Mews we believe that everyone is individual and, as such, each person’s care should be tailored to meet their own needs. Our staff quickly build up close relationships with residents and help quickly to settle our residents in. We appreciate that change is sometimes a challenge for the elderly but in no time at all, residents quickly settle into home life through the various shared activities we enjoy. We also encourage family to get involved in the daily life of the home; to join us for meals, activities and such. Residents too are encouraged to contribute to our residents committee or perhaps one of our interest groups, such as our gardening club.

All the rooms at Avery Mews are appointed to a high standard with high quality furnishings and decoration. However, residents are encouraged to bring in their own mementoes and keepsakes to really make their room their own - some residents even bring their own furniture and we encourage that!

Staying in touch with family and friends is a big part of the daily life at Avery Mews and this is easy with free Wi-Fi throughout the care home and access to a residents computer. Residents use email and some Skype family when a visit is difficult. Staff are on hand to help with the computers and we do also run a monthly tutorial session for those who want to brush up on their skills.

Avery Mews has a lovely, enclosed outdoor area where residents can sit in the sun and have a chat or a cup of tea and read the newspaper. The view from the patio looks out over the Spen Valley Heritage Trail, which passes through nearby Gomersal and brings walkers and cyclists right past our rear patio area.

Active Care Home Lifestyle

Avery Mews' staff know how important it is for their residents to lead active and fulfilling lives and so we ensure a lively schedule of events from our in house activities team every day. This could be anything from a sing-along to knitting club as well as trips out to the market in town, cafés and access bus to church every week. Avery Mews enjoys fantastic support of the local Heckmondwike community and groups come in from schools and clubs from across the district.

For residents who are more active then there is a gardening club whose members can often be found pottering about in the rear garden area where there are hanging baskets and pots to tend to. There are also dedicated quiet areas where residents can simply sit and enjoy the contemplative atmosphere.

Restaurant Standard Dining at Avery Mews

Having a nutritious and healthy diet is paramount to a healthy lifestyle and so Avery Mews has an in-house chef and excellent kitchen team which provide the care home with delicious meals made from fresh and local ingredients delivered every day.

As well as a balanced lunch and evening meal snacks such as home made cakes and biscuits are available throughout the day - great served with a pot of tea and a friendly chat to visiting family and friends.

The evening meal is one of the highlights of the day and there is a glass of wine or a sherry aperitif with the three course dinner. What is served every day is discussed in resident consultation sessions and then the chef will come out into the dining room and chat to the diners to get honest feedback. A very popular attraction at the care home is our themed food evenings and family members are welcome to join us at any time. Special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries are always well catered for and often other residents join in the fun.

Specialist Dementia Care West Yorkshire

Throughout Avery Mews care home there are little areas we like to call reminiscence areas. These have old clothes, sewing machines, plants, holiday scenes and carers chat to residents about their lives at any time. We like to use peoples life stories as a means of engaging with residents who live with dementia and this means that family are able to make valuable contributions to the care of their loved ones. The Connect programme allows residents to actively and positively contribute to the day to day running of the care home.
